7 Stress-Free Holiday Storage Ideas

December 9, 2021

holiday storageThe holidays bring joy – and some stress. Maybe make that “a lot of stress” when you factor in all the things that need to be done, and dragging out holiday decorations from winter storage, making room for them amid an influx of presents to be wrapped, and possibly guests staying over.

It doesn’t have to be that way, though. Getting organized is easier than you think, and a few simple tips will lower holiday stress.

    1. Make a Plan

A to-do list creates a sense of control. It can help you streamline activity and shopping.

Do yourself a favor and after you write down everything that needs to be done, take a step back and consider if it ALL has to be done. Maybe make one type of cookie this year instead of six, or even consider store-bought this year if the rest of your schedule is overloaded. Purchased sugar cookies can be decorated at home just as well as homemade ones can. Or plan more low-key activities like watching holiday movies together instead of doing every outside activity and party. Do it all if that makes you happy. Just consider scaling back what doesn’t.

    1. Clean Before You Decorate

It’s not fun, but it’ll make things easier in the long run. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but a good cleaning will save time later.

    1. Donate What Isn’t Used

If you have holiday decorations that you consistently leave in the box, donate them. It’ll save space when you put them back into winter storage and save time when you pull decorations out next year.

    1. Make Room

Unless you have a very minimalist decorating style, you’ll have to move some things around to have room for your tree and other holiday decorations. Creating space to hide presents until they’re wrapped could also help.

Box&Co. can make this easy for you. Give us a call, and we’ll drop off containers. Fill them, and we’ll pick them up again. Put items into storage to make room for your holiday decorations. Call to get them back when the holidays are over and put your holiday items into winter storage.

Need to clear out that guest room for holiday visitors? Put the unnecessary items into storage the same way and get them back afterward.

    1. Skip Specialty Containers

It’s tempting to use pricey specialty boxes and organizers to keep your holiday decorations safe when you put them into winter storage, but more affordable, cheaper solutions exist.

Small items can be kept in clean egg cartons. Apple containers are the right size to hold ornaments. Many cardboard beverage trays work great, too. You can also use a glue gun and plastic cups to make a cheap, custom ornament holder. Reuse cardboard tubes and wrap garland and lights around them to avoid tangles. Store curtain bead garland in a clean plastic soda or water bottle.

    1. Think Outside the Box

Storage bins are great, but an empty coat rack can be a terrific solution for storing holiday and seasonal wreaths. Cover with a plastic bag or garment bag, and attach a label. Swapping door wreaths for every holiday and season will be a snap.

    1. Hang Gift Wrap

Gift wrap is used all year round. Make it easy and avoid knocking over tubes by putting gift wrap rolls in a clear, plastic garment bag, and hanging them in a convenient closet.
