4 Great Back to School Shopping Tips

July 14, 2022

back to schoolEven though it seems like the kids just got out of school, it’s not too early to start back-to-school shopping, especially this year, with prices higher than usual for many items. As with many things, timing can help you save money on school supplies.

  • When Should I Start Buying Back to School Supplies?

Generally, the best time for back-to-school shopping is mid to late summer. However, it’s wise to keep an eye on sales circulars. Stores will often heavily discount something to lure people into stores, so while you’ll probably find better prices later, you don’t want to miss out on the occasional great deal that pops up earlier. Just don’t wait until late August when stores are most crowded, some school supplies could be sold out or have fewer options, and prices can be increased as a result.

Take advantage of apps and online services that help you compare prices and get notifications of price drops. Honey also enables you to find coupon codes. Look up the dates for this year’s state tax holidays.

  • When Should I Buy Back-to-School Clothing?

Sales for back-to-school clothing tend to start in August. However, if you want to maximize your budget, you might want to buy essentials and the items you especially like in August and wait for mid-September to buy the rest when they are in close-out sales to make room for winter clothing. The drawback to waiting, however, is diminished style and size selections, which is why getting the main items earlier is wise.

  • How Can You Save Money on School Shopping?

The first step is to evaluate what you already have and its condition. No sense in buying something you already have just because you didn’t realize it. Maybe that big box of pencils bought last year is still half full. Check clothing to see if it still fits and is in good condition. Make a back-to-school shopping list of your school supplies versus what you need.

Shopping thrift and consignment stores can yield some great deals. Dollar stores can be an excellent option for simple items like pencils, notebooks, hats, scarves, socks, etc.

Consider a clothing swap with friends who have kids roughly the same age. Summer garage sales can also provide cheaper clothing options.

  • How Many Outfits Should I Buy for School?

Back-to-school shopping lists can vary somewhat depending upon school dress codes, but a good guideline  for school clothing is:

    1. 2-4 hoodies
    2. 4-6 short-sleeved tops
    3. 2-4 long-sleeved tops
    4. 3-5 pairs of jeans
    5. 2-4 pairs of other pants, skirts, and/or shorts
    6. 2-4 sweaters
