New Year, New Home Office – 8 Organization Tips

January 14, 2021

working-from-homeThankfully, 2020 is behind us, but some changes and challenges linger and will continue to do so for a while. One of those things is working from home, either because it will take months for vaccination levels to reach the community threshold or because companies have realized they could save money with a distributed workforce instead of requiring everyone to be in the office.

When the pandemic began, many people thought working from home wouldn’t last for very long, so temporary arrangements at home seemed reasonable. Properly organizing your home office space is long overdue, no matter how large or small it is. Start the year off right by organizing your home office space so you can be more productive, happy, and organized in 2021.

  1. Clear Clutter
  2. Gather everything you use for work and sort it into categories of keep, throw out, delegate/pass on, and store. If you have to keep paper files or supplies and don’t have much room to spare, storing the items can be the perfect solution, especially with the convenience Box&Co offers.

  3. Everything in Its Place
  4. Hopefully, you have already selected a work location with good ergonomics. If you don’t have a desk, working at a dining room table is acceptable. Your couch is not, as your back will eventually tell you.

Apply this same principle to all of your work supplies, from chargers to necessary paperwork. Having a designated place for what you need saves time and mental stress, and we need less of the latter. Keep the items you use the most in handy spots. You can put the less-used things away.

  5. Make a Supply Area
  6. Whether it’s a small shelf, a storage caddy, a box, or something more creative, have one place that contains your pens, paperclips, and other office supplies. You can even mix office supplies with your décor for an attractive and practical solution.

  7. Box It
  8. Keep small items in containers. Even if you have a desk, using containers inside desk drawers can make life much more organized. If the drawers are shallow, drawer dividers are another option for keeping the desk contents organized.

  9. Go Vertical
  10. Use your wall space. A whiteboard or corkboard can be invaluable for planning. Hanging baskets or hanging file folder organizers can keep things nearby without taking up valuable space.

  11. Set Up a Mail Station
  12. A mail station can be as simple as a set of file folders, a box, or basket with section dividers, or something similar. Mark the sections or file folders for incoming mail, outgoing mail, bills, mail to file, one for each family member, and an area for stamps and envelopes. Go through everything once a week, and your mail stays organized

  13. Light It Up
  14. Good lighting is essential to avoid eye strain. It can even help your posture because when lighting is bad, people sometimes lean over or sit badly to compensate.

  15. End the Day the Right Way
  16. At the end of your workday, take a few minutes to put everything back in its place. This minimal effort will help keep you organized, save time because you won’t have to look for things later, and decrease stress.

Starting 2021 with an organized home office takes a little time. Keeping it managed just takes consistency. A little patience and persistence, and you can be more productive and relaxed.
