15 Tips for Making Your Move Easier

July 11, 2019

couple with tabletNo matter how much you’re looking forward to your move – buying a house, going to college, getting married, etc. – the actual moving process itself is a hassle and can cause a lot of stress. Unfortunately, it’s necessary so let’s make it as easy as possible with our helpful hints for an easier move.

  1. Get Lots of Boxes, In Many Sizes

  2. Unless you’ve moved a lot, you’re probably going to underestimate the number of boxes you need. Save time by getting extras even if you don’t think you’ll need them. You can always pass them on to someone else. Also, always get boxes in a variety of sizes.

  3. Heavy for Small/Light for Large

  4. When possible, put heavy items in smaller boxes so they’re not overloaded. If you have spare rolling suitcases, pack books and other heavy items in them. Use large boxes for light, bulky things like pillows whenever possible. It’s also better to use smaller boxes for books and having more of them than to have fewer, really heavy book boxes that could break.

  5. Pack Together

  6. When possible, only pack items from one room in a box. It will make unpacking and finding things easier.

  7. Label Everything

  8. Mark boxes with delicate items with a fragile sticker or at least write “Fragile” on the box so movers know not to put that box at the bottom of a stack. Numbering your boxes and keeping a list of what’s in what or at least what room it’s for is also a big help. Jot it down in a notebook or in the notes app on your phone.

  9. Don’t Pack Everything

  10. Money, jewelry, and prescription medication should never be packed. Those should stay with you. Important papers including passports and Social Security cards should as well.

  11. Make an Overnight Bag

  12. Don’t stress yourself by having to search for clothing and personal essentials. Pack an overnight bag with your toiletries and clothes for the next day or two. It’s pretty much a guarantee that you’ll be exhausted by the end of moving day. Make the process a little easier on yourself.

  13. Use What You Have

  14. Pack suitcases, hampers, and storage bins with things instead of moving them empty.

  15. Have an Essentials Box

  16. Separate from your overnight bag, pack an essentials box with paper towels, scissors, trash bags, phone chargers, toilet paper, tools, extension cords/power strips, etc. It’s also good to include paper plates or a couple of dishes, utensils, etc. If you can pack this in a clear bin, even better so you can immediately tell which is which.

  17. Start Off Squeaky Clean

  18. If possible, clean your new space before you move in or hire a cleaning service if that’s feasible. It will make your life easier and give you peace of mind.

  19. Stand Them Up

  20. Plates packed vertically, like you would with record albums, are more likely to survive the move safely.

  21. Keep Track of the Little Bits

  22. Use zip-style sandwich bags to hold screws and small pieces used to mount TVs, assemble furniture that was disassembled for the move, etc. Use a marker to write on the bag what it’s for so you don’t confuse them. If possible, attach the bag securely to the item.

  23. Take a Pic

  24. Before you disconnect electronics, take a photograph to remind you how they’re connected. If possible, label the wires as you disconnect them.

  25. Photo Documentation = Protection

  26. If you rent or are moving in or out of a college dorm, take photos of the empty space before you move in and then again after you move out so you have proof of the condition you received and left the space.

  27. Get a Sitter

  28. If you have children or pets, arrange for them to stay with a relative, friend, or a sitter during the move. Kids underfoot will just complicate things, and you don’t want to risk your pet’s safety.

  29. Pick the Right Date

  30. If possible, hire movers at least a month in advance and do the same for truck rentals if you’re doing it yourself. If you don’t have to move on a Saturday, avoid it since it’s the hardest and most expensive day to book due to its popularity. If you have the flexibility, ask about other days of the week to see which is the cheapest.
